According to Arch Daily, Zhang Ying, an architect and interior designer who graduated from Harvard, believes that “the emotion of proper distance” is the core of parent-child communication through her life communication and experience at home and abroad in her creation. So he believes that the best relationship between parents and children is to keep each other company but leave each other’s spiritual space.

The kindergarten consists of four different animals, lion, elephant, zebra, and parrot, respectively convey four different personality traits: communication, exploration, courage, and wisdom. The designer hopes to build a parent-child paradise with the way of thinking of “learning while playing, playing while learning“. It’s one of the super fun kindergarten designs for me!

3. Tanzishi Kindergarten / NAN Architects

Tanzishi kindergarten houses 18 classrooms, offices, an activity room, a kitchen, and a clinic, covering 5400 sqm (58125 sqft).

The design arranges the classrooms and supporting facilities as independent elements in flat grid order, interlacing the interior with the exterior, forming a spatial pattern of classrooms arranged around three courtyards. The courtyards are interpenetrated with each other and with the external site. The activity area of the classroom uses large floor-to-ceiling glass to ensure sufficient light and bring the vibrant courtyard landscape inside. The open outdoor corridor connects the courtyards and terraces, providing a rich outdoor play space.

In response to the height difference of the site and to reduce the oppressiveness of the building volume to the street, the classroom units along the street drop down to form a step-like roof deck. The north side of the building is elevated to provide ample light and excellent views of the classrooms. The large floor-to-ceiling windows, connecting corridors, and inner courtyard give the entire building a transparent image that stands out in the gloomy weather of Chongqing and brings life to the community.

The transparent volume adds layers and interest to the space, providing children with opportunities to hide and explore the space while fostering their creativity. When considering kindergarten designs, think about the space that children can explore.

According to the architects, four big old trees were retained, with people looking up to them for watching over the upcoming generation. These trees are visible from all the nursery rooms. By designing the building, with them at the center, a visual connection in between the rooms, the trees and the children was established. The emergency staircase from the second floor was extended all the way underneath the tree branches, making it possible for children to closely feel them and hence create a playful environment under.
